Not-So-Dumb OSPF

A new IETF RFC published!
OSPFv3.5: Routing excess traffic around bottlenecks dynamically :p

Okay, I’m not sure if MPLS-TE can do that (perhaps with the help of router QoS smart tools like the ones in Cisco IOS and JunOS), but I think this idea would be nice for the medium-to-enterprise-level network. The router has all the means to know if there’s a congestion and can use an alternative, higher cost route for the overflowing traffic–a more-aware version of unequal-cost multipath routing.

(It’s like OSPF knocked up EIGRP and got EOSPF!)

I can even see a new revenue stream in here for service providers. Maybe. Offering a shared overflow link? A backup bandwidth pool, charged per usage/traffic?

What do you think? Now, if somebody tells me this is an old idea, say, from the ATM LANE world, I’ll invoke Goodwin’s Law!

Marketeers and Lawyers

I had this thought the other day:

“Marketing is an acknowledgement of the human condition to misjudge.”

That’s all I’ve got. And I don’t get it myself. What do you think?

Man: Predictable?

Hypothesis for Fun: two people with exactly the same brains (same size, structure, anatomy, chemistry, EVERYTHING), when asked to select random numbers, will select the same series of numbers in the same order when they’re in the same environment. In other words, this is to say that brain computation is not really random–given the right tools and a sufficient understanding of the human mind, human randomness or “unpredictability” can be predicted. Well, at least in mathematical decisions like picking random numbers or perhaps random shapes. What do you think?

Bras and Spaceships

Here’s a silly thought!
The space program may not be in women’s best interest–colonization of other planets or moons will demote women’s role to that of centuries ago on Earth. You know, necessary propagation of the species or, more succinctly, getting knocked up (sorry, miladies). This may be more evident the farther the planet/moon is from Earth and the smaller the colony.

1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, 100 Gbps, wtf Gbps??

While many are aroused by the mere mention of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and with 1GigE ports and NICs proliferating in the enterprise IT market like rabid rabbits, we now take for granted whether we really need 1Gbps in the access. I mean, it kind of makes sense to me to require a GigE connection for an enterprise-class server, but it doesn’t yet resonate with my rationalization when it comes to office desktops and laptops.
E-mail and Internet browsing experience doesn’t get better with 1000Mbps of bandwidth, compared to 100Mbps. A video conferencing stream works very well at 768Kbps. Most networked enterprise applications are not peer-to-peer. So when do we truly need GigE? Considering the fact that GigE switches and IP phones are currently almost double the price of their 10/100Mbps brethren, this will be a very important question for sometime. I think. What do you think?

Action and Consequence

When you’re a manager, you’d have to have an acute sense of what and when things can become a problem for you. Specifically, your actions and behaviours (or inactions) that may seem okay at the time, but almost always tend to brew and eventually be used by others against you in pinpointing your shortcomings.
An example at work is when I exhibit a soft side in a situation that, due to my inexperience, I thought waranted that, only to realize that it was out of place. People won’t tell you what you did wrong. They may not even realize it themselves at the time. Give it some time and they’ll come back at you with it and bite you in the ass. Actually, they usually badmouth you instead of facing you, so you’re ass will be fine. What do you think?

Stress: What’s Too Much?

Sometimes when I’m really stressed out at work or college to the point of burnout, I start to realize my vulnerability and even my fragile mortality in this world. I start to feel small or insignificant, and all of a sudden not so special. And when I lay down to rest, I feel like death can come anytime then. It’s strange but it’s not really depressing; it feels more like something scary yet intriguing. I mean death, how vulnerable we are and how rarely we tend to think about this. What do you think?
